Young Xhosa girls who are betrothed are usually extremely competitive when it comes to beadwork – the more elaborate the beadwork they can create for themselves and their beaus to wear to the regular teenage dances, the more status the girl and the boy receive. They will bead literally anything from sunglasses frames to teaspoons and are very inventive. I have never seen an armband as complicated as this one before, yet it is typically Xhosa. The rectangular beaded panel is held in place around the upper arm by three strings which fasten with buttons, with a beaded streamer on either side. Size 20 x 10 cm / 8 x 4 inches
