The Baroka are a Northern Sotho tribe who live in a small area in what used to be the Northern Transvaal Lowveld, now Limpopo Province. These small rectangular aprons are made for young Boroka girls undergoing initiation into adulthood and are called Thito. They were made for a ceremony held only a few years ago – proof that this tribal tradition continues .Thito are beaded by the young girl’s mother , usually utilising a geometric pattern of triangles in bright colours. One of these two authentic and used 2oth century examples is also decorated with four South African ten cent coins. Sizes: brown skirt with coins 24 x 32 cm/ 9 ½ x 12 ½ inches , blue skirt 26 x 30 cm/ 10 ¼ x 11 ¾ inches.
